Wedding Wednesday: cakes and pies

The first cake I ever made was when I was 10 years old for my mom's birthday. It tasted awful, but my baking skills have improved a great deal over the years!I love baking, so naturally the cakes were an important part of the reception to me.

The last thing I wanted was some huge wedding cake that had been baked days before the wedding and then frozen, which is pretty typical of wedding cakes. They look gorgeous, but the flavor isn't so great. I didn't care so much what the cakes looked like, but I wanted them to taste great.

Originally I wanted to bake the cakes myself, but that seemed like a major undertaking so I hired a high-schooler to make them. I gave her my recipes, and she baked them in a certified kitchen. We had 5 different cake flavors: salted caramel, chocolate with peanut butter frosting, white cake with lemon frosting, pumpkin cake, and red velvet.

Most of the cake toppers were made by a friend of mine and this is my favorite one! My friend made the bride and groom and Sam made the little Finn.

I made this banner and the signage.

I made this cake topper. Sam is from Missouri and I'm from Alabama.

I made this cake topper for my sister's wedding and reused it for my wedding.

We also had 4 different pies, in addition to the wedding cakes. We had apple cranberry, pumpkin, paleo pecan, and rhubarb. The pies were made at Mason Dixon bakery, a gluten free bakery.

Wedding Wednesday: champagne and cutting the cake

We skipped a couple of the reception traditions, like tossing the garter and bouquet, but we did include the champagne bride and groom toast and cutting the cake.

I got our champagne glasses at Anthropologie. They're from the Galleria Collection.

Our height difference made the champagne toast a little complicated.

We eventually got the hang of it after Sam squatted down.

We had 5 difference cakes and 4 pies (I'll post about that next week). We decided to cut the salted caramel cake because we were most excited about that flavor.

To cut the cake we used my great-great grandparents cake knife that was used at their wedding in 1895.

After (nicely) exchanging our cake bites, Sam cut a huge piece of cake and we split it. It was delicious!
Next week I'll go into more detail about our cakes!

Trip to Rochester, NY

 The day after Christmas, Sam, my mom, and I drove to Rochester, NY, to visit with family. This was Sam's first trip to Rochester, so we did some sight seeing in the area. We drove to Lewiston, NY to visit some family friends, drove by Niagara University where my sister Stephanie graduated, and then stopped by Niagara Falls.

My sister Megan and her girlfriend Amed flew in from Utah and we spent some time on the Seneca Falls wine trail. It was such a pretty area!
Our favorite winery was Hermann J Wiemer Vineyard.

We also visited The George Eastman House, founder of Kodak. My favorite room was his green library.

On New Year's Eve, we celebrated my grandfather's 80th birthday at the Yacht Club. Nine out of the ten grandchildren were there

We spent New Year's day at my aunt's house, spending time with family. Here are my crazy cousins.

The next day we drove home. In case you were wondering, Rochester is a 17 hour drive from Alabama. My mom and Sam did all the driving because my mom thinks my eyesight isn't good enough to be driving. That's perfectly find by me because I don't even like driving.

Our house hunt, Part 2

In mid-January I posted that Sam and I had started looking at houses. Then a couple weeks later, I posted that we bought a house. If that seems like a quick house hunt, that's because it was! I wanted to go back and give more detail about how we picked our house.

Last month Sam showed me some houses online and mentioned that maybe we should start looking. We've looked at houses online for years and haven't found anything we liked at all. There just didn't seem to be much inventory the past few years. We talked about building a house, and we found a neighborhood and a floor plan that we both loved.

Based on houses we saw online, we could buy an ugly dated house from the 1990's or build a brand new, pretty house for the exact same price. Building seemed like the way to go.

Then in January, Sam found several houses that he really liked online. We decided to start looking at houses, (already built) and if we didn't find anything we liked about 2 or 3 months, then we would build. In mid-January we looked at 5 houses in one day. The last house we looked at was our house. We both loved it after seeing the house in person. I just knew right away that it was The House. I could see us living there.

We saw the house again on January 24th and then made an offer on the 25th. The inspection was on Monday and several big issues came up. Nothing very surprising to us because we had already looked through the house with a fine toothed comb. The biggest issues are that the crawl space is filled with water and mold and the moisture barrier isn't installed and the heat pump for the upstairs is out. We've asked the seller to fix everything, and now we're waiting to hear back. All this waiting is the hardest part!

Wedding Wednesday: Food and Drink

I'm trying to get back on track with my wedding posts. I left off with the receiving line that we did after our ceremony. Now it's time to talk about the reception details, in particular the food that we ate!

The reception was located at Limestone Bay Trading Co., which used to be a restaurant but is now only open for special events. The buffet line was located inside the restaurant building (photo above). The drinks, beer, wine, cakes, and pies were located outside behind the restaurant in a garden area.

We had mismatched china for the dinner plates.

This is the garden shed, where all the beverages were located.

We had beer, which was brewed by Sam's brother-in-law, wine that was purchased from Sam's Club and tea from a local company, Piper and Leaf.

I designed and printed all the signage for the wedding.

Sam and I ate our dinner privately inside the restaurant building. We were both filled with nerves, so we didn't eat much. All the other guests ate outside under a tent.

Our menu included beef brisket, mac and cheese, grilled veggies, potato salad, pasta salad, broccoli salad, fruit salad, and rolls.
