Honeymoon: Santorini Greece

Thursday, August 14, 2014

Santorini was the next honeymoon stop. We were both amazed that a town was built on top of rock! It really made me wonder how on earth the first settlers even made it up there!!

We went on a vineyard tour booked through Santorini Wine Tour. We went to three different vineyards and our first stop was Boutari.

Instead of the typical vineyards that we see in the rest of the world, in Santorini the vines are wrapped around a basket and grown on the ground. This protects the vines from the wind and the heat. The vines aren't watered and only get moisture through the dew on the ground.

Estate Argyros was the second winery we went to. Santorini is known for its white wines, in particular the Vin Santo wine. Vin Santo wine is made from the Assyrtiko grape. After the grapes are harvested, the grapes are dried in the sun for two weeks and then pressed. We tried a 4, 8, 12, 20 year Vin Santo. The 20 year was my favorite! We bought a bottle (expensive!) and we plan to drink it on our one year anniversary.

The last vineyard we went to Domaine Sigalas and it was definitely the prettiest.

Next stop: Olympia (I'll post about it next week)!
