Germany: Rhine River castles

Monday, May 19, 2014

I'm currently in Greece on my honeymoon! In the meantime, I have a series of travel posts scheduled until I return.
In May 2012 I went to Germany for work and was able to do some site seeing while I was there. Along the Rhine River there are about 30 castles North and South. I started Mainz and turned around at Koblenz and saw nearly every castle.
It's just crazy to me to be driving around and suddenly see a medieval castle!

the town of Bacharch, Germany

Stahleck Castle from the 12th century

Kaub Castle in the middle of the river — in Kaub, Germany

Loreley Rock, where the water spirits cause lots of shipwrecks — at St. Goarshausen

Burg Katz, built in 1371 Count Wilhelm II of Katzenelnbogen

While driving up a hill trying to find a castle, I came across this beautiful area. The yellow patches are canola plants, which is used to make canola oil.

Canola plants; this is my favorite picture from Germany
