The other job I have

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

I realized that I've only talked about my interior design student worker job, but I do have another job on campus. In the evenings, I work in the Telecounseling office. Despite what the title sounds like, we don't counsel people. We call prospective students to recruit them. I got bored with calling students so lately, I have been writing letters instead.

In March 2007 I was the Most Valuable Telecounselor.

Weekend Update

Sunday, February 24, 2008

I had a nice quiet weekend. On Friday, I went over to my friend's boyfriend's house. My friend cooked dinner and I made cookies. The next day the three of us plus my friend's roommate went out to eat at Newk's. I love that restaurant and I'm so glad we have one here in Clinton!

I finally finished the book I was reading, The Other Boleyn Girl. I will be seeing the movie this weekend with my friend Ashley. I can't wait!

On Saturday I got to see Shawn for the first time since the beginning of Janurary. Not in person, unfortunately, but via webcam which I gave him for Valentine's day. I borrowed a friend's webcam since she had an extra one, but I think something is wrong with the microphone because it kept making a random background noise. So Shawn ended up buying me the same webcam that I gave him. I should get it at the end of this week.

I love to organize; I think it's one of my gifts. The reason that I started working for the art department was because I could organize and get paid to do it! This semester, there is another student worker in addition to me, and it is so nice to have another person helping me! Last week we did a lot of work in the Interior Design building, and we finished up today. We had several samples donated to us last semester, and now everything is finally organized and put away after sitting in bags next to the door for over two months.

My sister, Stephanie

Monday, February 18, 2008

My sister Stephanie and I have gotten a lot closer recently. She actually talks to me now! I was glad that she came to Mississippi for the funeral, so I could hang out with her. She stopped by my room at school and went "shopping" in my closet. She took back a pair of shoes and a shirt.

Not much going on

I spent this last weekend with my friend Stephanie. We had a great time hanging out. It was really nice to have home cooked food and sleep in a comfortable bed. On Saturday we went to see Atonement. It was a lot more depressing than I thought it would be, but the film itself was beautiful! The shots, the colors, the camara angles: from an artistic point of view I thought this movie was amazing.

For a year I have been a student worker for the Interior Design department. Mostly, my job consists of cleaning and organizing the materials we have in the Interior Design building (fabric, trim, magazines, etc) but today I am starting something new!

From now on, my duties will consist mostly of operating the plotter (which is basically a huge printer). In twenty minutes I'm meeting with the Interior Design coordinator and I'm going to learn how to operate the machine. I'm sure it's not hard, but I am excited about doing something new and working more hours.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Shawn made these for me last year for Valentine's.

This is the box of goodies Shawn gave me this year for Valentine's: three hand made cards, two poems he wrote, Ghirardelli chocolate, Rocher chocolate, Sour Patch gummies, gummi bears, Tazo assorted teas for 10 different flavors, Lipton white tea with mango. Love it!

This is what one of my best friends gave me for Valentine's. In addition to this cute giraffe she gave me a huge Hershey's kiss and a solid chocolate fish.

I also got a package from my mom with Dove chocolates inside. What a great Valentine's!

First Designer Check!

Monday, February 11, 2008

I had posted earlier about my first job, which was the children's choir room at church. Today, I got my check from that job. The most exciting part was the envelope, which said "Designer Services" underneath my name!

On Friday my grandfather passed away.

He was originally from Mississippi, so his funeral was here. On Saturday morning my dad, stepmom and my sister Stephanie came down to make arrangements. The funeral home was located in Forest and he was buried way out in the country.

I'm glad I got to see my family and meet lots of new family, but I wish it had been under different circumstances.

Since my grandfather was buried next to his mother, I got to see where my great grandmother was buried and her mother, my great-great grandmother was buried close by too.

This is the chapel where my grandfather was buried.

My family: me, Stephanie, my dad, and Trish.

Some flowers from the graveside arrangement.

Something more positive

Thursday, February 7, 2008

I decided that after that last post, I needed to do something positive, so I decided to update my blog a bit. I changed the title picture to something that a wonderful friend took for me. My friend took pictures of my projects last semester because at the time I had no idea the school would be bringing in a photographer. I think all the photos turned out great, so I'm including some of them here.

My model is missing!

Yes, it's missing!! This is horrible! The department practically forces us to give up our student projects and now something of mine is missing!!

As I mentioned before, we have a professional photographer coming to school tomorrow. Today I gathered up my projects from the holding room, so that they would be ready for tomorrow. And I noticed that my model from freshman year is missing!

Thankfully I happened to have a picture of it, so I showed the picture around, but no one had ever seen it! The last time I saw it, I was handing it over to the (then) coordinator.

It makes me so angry that the school makes us give them every single project we do, and then they end up losing one of my projects!

At least I have a picture of it (which I included in this post), and I will have other models to show in my portfolio. At least three others. But it still makes me mad!

Professional Photographs

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Last semester, I wrote a letter to my professors stating that I would not be giving the school any more of my student work. We students are told that we HAVE to give our projects to the school for accreditation. We were told that giving the school our projects wasn't a big deal because employers don't want to see our actual projects, but would prefer to view digital photographs of our work. We were also told that the school would be providing us the professional quality photographs. It never happened.

So I felt that I had to take action! Shawn helped me write a letter expressing that I would not continue giving the school my projects unless they followed through with their promises. And finally I am seeing some results! A professional photographer is coming on Friday to take pictures of all our work. And it's absolutely free!
